Composite tubes combine the best characteristics of metal tubes and plastic tubes

When in 1984 Dreistern delivered the first system for multilayer composite tubes, nobody could have imagined the unbelievable success this tube would have. Within a few years it became the most popular tube for heating and drinking water in Europe.  It has the temperature and pressure resistance of metal tubes combined with the corrosion resistance of plastic tubes. Dreistern roll forming systems work at production speeds of up to 60 m/min and with an extremely low scrap rate. On changing the tube dimensions, Dreistern roll forming systems score points with short re-tooling times. In a benchmark test they produced the shortest re-tooling times.

For the manufacture of composite pipes, Dreistern offers three different size
systems, the RSV 32 for the diameter range from 12 to 32 mm, the RSV 63 for the diameter range from 12 to 63 mm and the RSV 110 for the diameter range from 12 to 110 mm. Depending on requirements, Dreistern uses TIG processes or a laser to weld the aluminium tube.

As a pioneer of composite technology, Dreistern is working on further applications for composite technology. Dreistern has demonstrated that composite pipe systems can also process copper and stainless steel. With a thickness of only 80 m this finding opens up interesting new applications for stainless steel composite pipes with impressive cost advantages.

Strip systems

Strip systems

Even more than normal on pipe welding systems, the continuous supply of the system with strip material is very important. As a rule composite pipe systems operate at least 5 x 24 hours per week. Any system downtime causes extensive cleaning work on the extruders and must therefore be avoided if possible. Dreistern strip systems comprise two unwinding reels, a strip end welding machine and a strip cache. They ensure an uninterrupted supply of strip to the overall system. An important advantage of Dreistern strip systems is that even extremely thin-walled strips can be processed without damage or overstretching. This aspect is one of the prerequisites for error-free welding and an extremely low scrap rate.

Trimming station

Aluminium is covered with an oxide layer on exposure to air, this layer must be removed prior to welding. This task is performed by the trimming station that cuts the strip on each side by 1 – 2 mm. Dreistern trimming stations are continuously and precisely adjusted to the correct strip width. They provide perfect strip edges and exactly the right strip width for the pipe forming process.

The pipe forming is the heart of every composite pipe system. The special pipe forming method developed by Dreistern ensures a particularly low-stress pipe is formed with minimal cold work hardening. At the end of the pipe forming the edges of the strip are passed to the welding station precisely positioned. In addition, pipes that have been manufactured on Dreistern roll forming systems can be better processed as they have significantly better plasticity than other pipe forming methods. This characteristic permits tighter radii during pipe installation. Plasticity is particularly important for fitting systems where the pipe ends are expanded.

Dreistern has extensive experience with the TIG and laser welding of compo-
site pipes. In an in-house welding technology laboratory, welding is continuously further perfected with material specialists from aluminium suppliers and welding experts from suppliers of the welding power supplies or the welding lasers. As a consequence, Dreistern systems can provide perfect weld seams for all types of aluminium used for composite pipes. Thanks to automatic electrode feed, TIG systems provide weld seams of consistent quality without operator intervention.
